Self-Care Tips for the Holidays!

1/. Set boundaries, saying no or modifying family rituals is OK- it may be a new tradition for your family or maybe just for this year. As happens with marriage, having a baby means adding a new family member and sometimes that requires to change your commitments

2/. Check in with partner- mothers aren’t the only ones that experience anxiety/depression or overwhelming emotions during the holidays! Create a safe word “mistletoe” for example (lol to those that have watched Four Christmas') to let one another know when you or your partner have reached a limit.
This keeps you both on the same page!

3/. Take a walk, connect with nature. Adding the outdoors can be calming, relaxing and quiet the mind! This is a great way to still spend time with family (or alone)
but change up the atmosphere

4/. Don’t over do it on the sweets- excess sugar can add to stress responses in the body, heighten anxiety and feelings of depression. Same goes for caffeine!

5/. Try out EFT- emotional freedom technique is an amazing technique to work through feelings in a positive, easy way! Tapping releases blockages in the meridian pathways in the body. Using guided tapping routines or seeing an EFT practitioner can help to release and ultimately change how your body processes negative feeling and emotions. We often think emotions are separate from our physical body but in fact emotions
are felt throughout our bodies.

6 /. Aromatherapy- using essential oils can be a great way to relax and ease anxiety or overwhelming emotions- great with epsom salts for a soothing soak in the tub. Add a little music or straight up silence and create a great space for unwinding and clearing the mind

7/. Alcohol- I often get asked about alcohol and breastfeeding and if you need to pump and dump. the answer is No. Alcohol in breastmilk works the same as your blood, over time your body will metabolize it, so as the blood alcohol level decreases so does alcohol levels in your breastmilk. Having a beverage in between feeds does not mean you need to pump and dump. Be mindful of your feeding schedules and how long
your baby typically goes in between feeds.
