The universal image of birth (in the Western hemisphere anyways), 

is a women lying on her back. 

But where and when did this start? 

Women having been giving birth since the beginning of time 

so let's take a look at how birth has changed through the ages. 

 

As a doula I have the privilege of supporting families through their birth journey 

and witness women giving birth in all kinds of positions. There certainly is no right or wrong way to birth but finding the position or positions that work best for you and baby should be discovered. Many women don't know that there are OTHER ways to give birth besides being on their backs.
