Dads + Doulas

One of the most frequently asked questions I get at a doula consult is
What about my partner? Does having a doula present take away from their role?
As many partners would attest to, having a doula does not replace or interfere with the intimacy of your experience, rather doulas help to ensure both mother and partners needs are met. Doulas work to enable and encourage each partner to participate at their own comfort level, reducing stress and allowing couples to connect throughout their experience. Every couple has their own dynamic and expectations about
how their doula can and will best support them,
this is an important topic to be discussed during the prenatal visits.

Beyond the birth experience, Postpartum doulas are a wonderful addition to help you journey into parenthood. Providing practical assistance, emotional support and information to ease the transition, many families are turning to this kind of professional and non-judgemental support! A postpartum doula can help new parents gain the confidence
and skills they need to care for their infant(s) and
adjust to their new lives and changing relationships.

Doulas value partners and acknowledge that they may be the birth parent, a male or female partner, family, friends, or companion by offering a family-centred support approach. By encouraging dads/partners to find their confidence and to end these perpetuating stereotypes. Let's stop referring to and treating them like they are an inept accessory to parenting. Dad's don't babysit, they parent! Doulas can be an integral part of creating a safe space for partners to bond and explore their new role.
